Lens in absolutely mint condition, good as new.
Amongst the different brands, compared to other brands with their own mount such as nikon and sony, 3rd party brands such as tamron and sigma, Canon was the last of them to launch its own cropped sensor 18-200mm, wide range 11X zoom lens. This lens can really be said as long awaited. There was a good few years where nikon's 18-200vr had been extremely popular (especially before nikon launched its fullframe D3), and countless copies were sold worldwide, but users in the canon camp can only envy them.. At last... after ages, Canon finally came out with their own 18-200.
Surprisingly, Canon did not put a high $1500 price tag on this lens, instead it was really price affordably. On closer examination, we realise canon had decide to reduce the cost of the lens, by excluding some features such as USM. However image quality remained uncompromised as technologies such as UD elements were still being used. In this way, Canon is able to make this lens affordable even to non professional photographers.
Frankly speaking, if you are just an occassional photographer, or just starting out and have yet to actually decide on a specialised photography genre such as macros, birding, event, portraiture, etc.. then this lens is definitely suitable for you, not only because you will not have to endure the agony of watching what could be the perfect shot go by just because you cant change lens in time, or did not bring out the right lens, but also because it give you the chance to try of different focal lengths before deciding which suits you so you can consider getting a prime in that focal length.
Even if you are a seasoned photographer, then you probably should understand the more the convenience this lens can offer. Despite the large 11X zoom this lens offers, image quality is still very decent at all focal lengths, true that there may some compromise in terms of distortion at both ends, but hey.. what cant be fixed in photoshop.
One of the advantage of the canon original over 3rd party 18-200 lenses such as those from sigma and tamron, is that at the tele end, it maintains a F5.6 aperture, the others are F6.3, now although its only 1/3 stop, it make a pretty significant difference in the shutter speed, which is important when shooting at the tele end. It also has a much better built than either of them and maintains sharp, contrasty images at wide open apertures at each focal length.
Compared to some of the other kit lens options available by canon such 18-55, 18-135, 17-85, the 18-200 has an absolutely advantage in terms of its 11.1X zoom, built wise it is also significantly more solid than the newer 18-135. It also spots larger aperture in the middle focal lengths compared to all the other kit lenses.
One more very good reason to get this lens, is that it maintains a min focusing distance of only 0.48m throughout the full zoom range, now that is really something, most telelens above 200mm have min focusing distance of 1.5m. Though there are talks that a compromise is being done and at 200mm, 0.48m, the angle of view is not really that of a 200mm, but hey its saves the need for a macro lens, why not?
In recent times, this lens has also been discovered to be a godsend for travel video with the 7D and 550D, the IS remains working in video mode and really gives some stabilized video, as though multi thousand dollar steadycam setups were being used. Lens had been sent to canon for service and calibration. Rest assured to be getting the best resolution and sharpness possible with this lens.
